- This handmade Celtic Dragon design brooch is etched in Zinc. Replica of an open work Viking oval brooch from the 10th century, after a discovery by Morberg in the southern Norwegian province of Buskerud.
- The Viking oval brooch is also called tortoise brooch or turtle brooch and was an integral part of the women's garment during the Viking Age. The Viking turtle brooch was worn beneath the right and left shoulder in pairs and served to fasten the apron with the garment. The tortoise brooch is cast from high quality bronze and is elaborately polished. Also available in silver plated.
- On the back of the oval brooch from Morberg a sturdy needle is attached - so the turtle brooch is also suitable for garments made of heavy wool. The oval brooch from Morberg was found in the Norwegian province of Buskerud and is now exhibited in the Historical Museum in Oslo. The design of that turtle brooch is typical for the so-called Jelling style, which dominated the art of the Vikings during the 10th century.
- Dimensions of the Viking brooch: 57 x 40 x 15 mm. The oval brooch was always worn in pairs. Therefore, we sell as 2pcs/set.The price is for 2 items. A detailed information about Viking tortoise brooches can be found in the famous publication "Vikingetide smykker" from 1928 by Jan Petersen.
- Oval Apron brooches are signature elements of Viking's female costume. They were used mostly as a necessary accessory to wear Apron overdress. These beautiful jewelry pieces has been made as a part of our "Shieldmaiden" collection to be worn with our "Ingrid the Hearthkeeper" Apron. There is in-house designed etched pattern on them to match this costume.
